The benefits of using sea sponges:
Sea sponges are the most natural and caring ways to cleanse, massage and gently exfoliate your skin and are superior to any synthetic alternative. When wet they can be compared to the feel of silk yet they can clean like no other washcloth can. Sea Sponges are hypoallergenic and suitable for even the most sensitive of skins. They are very long lasting as they are more resistant to abrasion and they will not peel like synthetic sponges while being used. Sea Sponges are better for bathing and cleansing because they soak up and hold more water without dripping. Natural sponges naturally inhibit the growth of bacteria and wash out more quickly and easily and will not retain odours.
To the Ancient Greeks the sea sponge was known as a 'Zoofitan'; a unique category, meaning half plant/half animal. Today many zoologists classify sea sponges in an animal sub-kingdom, due to their hermaphroditic ability to reproduce. However, they are distinct from any other animal species because of their ability to also asexually reproduce and to regenerate from a single cell. The sponge has neither brain nor central nervous system and maintains many plant like qualities.
Sponges are the product of at least 700 million years of evolution and are among the world’s simplest living organisms. Sponges are located all over the world from tropical to polar waters and to all depths. Among the 12500 known species, only 7 have commercial value. Commercial sponges come from temperate seas of depths of 10-15 metres. Each type of sponge is identifiable to the area it grows.
Natural sea sponges are a biodegradable renewable natural resource. Scientific studies have confirmed that regular harvesting of the sponges enhances the health and population. In fact many areas where sponges are harvested are marine protected areas for this reason. We carefully monitor our divers who carry special licences to fish for sponges. All the sponges are inspected by the relevant Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries to be certified for export. The divers harvest the sponges individually by cutting the sponge at the base, leaving the ‘roots’ intact and enabling the sponge to re-grow. Only sponges above 5” are permitted to be harvested leaving the smaller ones to grow. Sponges also have the ability to regenerate from the smallest fragment so when the sponges are disturbed by the divers moving on the sea bed they release cells and multiply. Therefore areas that are fished for sponges will have a larger sponge population that one that is not. All the materials used in the packaging and processing are recyclable.
We always buy our sponges directly from the local divers at fair prices, therefore supporting the local community in that area and ensuring the old tradition of sponge fishing are not lost.
We still use the old traditional methods of the sponge industry to process, measure and prepare sponges for sale. We carefully monitor every stage in the production of natural sponges from the sourcing by our divers to the packaging of the final product. Our sponges under go 42 stages of processing by hand and the final stages are always carried out in our London warehouse. This ensures we have complete quality control from beginning to end.
Rinse in warm water after every use and allow to dry naturally where air can circulate. Do not bleach, boil, machine wash or wring – just squeeze gently. To more thoroughly clean the sponge, soak it in a solution of one part warm water and one part white wine vinegar for up to one hour, or a couple of drops of Citricidal – a natural antibacterial agent made from grapefruit seeds. Rinse well and set the sponge out to air dry. This will keep the sponge fresh and inhibit the growth of bacteria.
The sea sponges will enlarge by approximately 10% when wet. As this is a natural product please check your sponge before use for any sea debris.
